Epic Games Store now requires two-factor authentication for free games

The Epic Games Store offers free titles for players who sign in and claim them. So far, it's been a nice little bonus to those who are willing to split their game library to another game launcher. Beginning April 28, there'll be a slight barrier between players and their free Epic-granted games: two-factor authentication.

From April 28 to May 21, the Epic Games Store will require two-factor authentication (2FA) before someone can claim their free games. With two-factor authentication, players will need to enter a separate security code before signing in to their account. Players who do not have 2FA enabled will see this message when trying to claim a free game:

Two Factor Authentication Required

Claiming this free game requires you to have Two-Factor Authentication setup on your account. Two-Factor Authentication provides an additional level of security to your Epic Games account and will help prevent unauthorized access.

Epic says it's making the change "in an effort to encourage our players to take steps to strengthen their Epic account security." The popularity of Fortnite has made Epic Games accounts a target for hackers, and enabling two-factor authentication is a good practice.

Right now, players can claim For the King, a strategy RPG with a blocky, charming style and roguelike elements for free until April 30 at 11 a.m. Next up on the list of free games are horror classic Amnesia: The Dark Descent and crafting RPG Crashlands, which will be available for free from April 30 to May 7.
