Epic Games Store Weekly Free Game Offer Set to Continue

The Epic Games Store (EGS) is set to continue competing with Steam after Epic announced it's doing better than probably anyone expected.

Gamers seem to have a love/hate relationship with EGS. Some detest the fact Epic has managed to convince developers to launch exclusively there as an alternative to Steam. Others appreciate being offered more choice in where to buy their PC games. Nobody can really argue with all the free games, though, of which there's been 73 so far.

As GameDaily.biz reports, it's been 13 months since Epic officially launched its Steam rival and the latest stats make it clear why the digital games store is sticking around. Epic says 108 million customer have grabbed games through the store, spending $680 million in the process. As Epic CEO Tim Sweeney explains, "108M is the total number of Epic Games accounts which have specifically obtained the PC version of at least one product, whether free or paid."

The good news for anyone already signed up for an EGS account is the weekly free games offer is set to continue for the rest of 2020, as is the focus on game exclusives. For everyone else, an EGS account is free, so why not go sign up and claim the free games at least?

Steve Allison, Epic Games Store GM, says 90 percent of all EGS releases are exclusives and that they've "driven the majority of revenue so far." Sweeney also sees exclusives as a way to, "assist developers with product funding and invest in marketing and awareness knowing that these efforts bring in new customers to our store, rather than just sending more business to the incumbent."

If you're wondering how Epic manages to keep the free games flowing, it's because developers get paid for them. As Sweeney explains, "Epic pays each developer or publisher for the opportunity to distribute their game free for a week. The paid amounts are negotiated to ensure that the developer gains more from the Epic payment and resulting new customer influx than they would expect to lose in paid sales as the result of the free week."

If Valve isn't viewing EGS with some concern now, it surely will by the time we hear from Sweeney this time next year when at another 50+ games have been offered for free and regular exclusives have drawn even more gamers to the store.
